Crossing an imaginary border… near Washington DC is Georgetown District… A very special and worth visiting place… If you do not want to go on your own, several tourist bus lines will help you to get there…
We had a very rainy day… that’s why we use our bus tickets to help us in this journey…
One of the streets that most caught my attention was M Street… with shops and cafes along this and beautiful buildings reveal an elegant and well planned city… If you love cooking, I must tell you that not far from here is the house where Julia Child (2706 Olive St NW); recognized for providing French cuisine to the public of his country with the release of her cookbook «Mastering the Art of French Cooking»; with her husband Paul lived around 1948.
After that we keep walking down the street… A good place to stop and eat something is Paradiso Pizzeria (3282 M St NW); delicious pizzas, breads and sauces in a very friendly atmosphere… For dessert… we just have to cross the street and get the 3301; here you can visit the famous sisters Katherine and Sophie in her Georgetown Cupcakes… everything looks like the TV show (DC Cupcakes); their fuchsia boxes, its many cupcake flavors and the inevitable line that you must do to access these delicious desserts… a cool experience…
A full stomach makes for a happy heart… Time to walk again…
If you are a movie lover, and even more horror movies, this will be a great opportunity, you will see one of the most famous houses of all times when you reach the 3600 Prospect St NW, the house where The Exorcist was filmed in 1973; although the house was modified since that time, still it maintains the shape of their doorways and windows… and close to it the stairs where we saw Karran father die in this classic that leave so many people dying of fear…
Near the stairs we can find the Georgetown University (3700 O St NW), where various scenes from the same movie were set… the courtyard of the university, the Dahlgren Chapel and the main entrance of it can be appreciated in the shots of the film…
The imposing Washington National Cathedral (3101 Wisconsin Ave NW) welcomes us on a beautiful hill… The construction of the church began in 1907, the first brick was laid in the presence of President Theodore Roosevelt and lasted 83 years and the last piece was put in presence of former President George Bush in 1990. This Cathedral have adjustments very often, a funny thing is that when they put a new gargoyle back in the eighties, there was a children’s competition to decide which image should have, resulting winning the Darth Vader image (Star Wars), so you can see in the northeast tower a slightly different gargoyle than the others…
In Georgetown we can also found the Smithsonian Zoo (3001 Connecticut Ave NW); also known as the National Zoo, this zoo was founded in 1889 and has about 2000 animals of 400 different species in two facilities and its most famous residents are the giant pandas… As I had already told them, the entrance to it is free and the only closing day of the year is Christmas day…
Leaving Georgetown, a place that you cannot miss is the Arlington National Cemetery, this is an American military cemetery established during the American Civil War. It is located across the Potomac River in Virginia and near the Pentagon. Veterans of all wars are buried in this place, from the Revolutionary War to the military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Among the most visited and recognized tombs we can name… the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, dedicated to those soldiers whose remains could not be identified… The eternal flame at the tomb of John F. Kennedy… The Space Shuttle Challenger Memorial… the Marine Corps War Memorial… among others…
As I had told before, for me Washington is a charming town, full of many things to visit… full of history, art and beauty… unfortunately is time to leave… NYC awaits us in a few days… see you soon…
