Luego de recorrer 175km hacia el norte desde Richmond, llegaremos a uno de los lugares más interesantes que he visitado alguna vez… Washington D.C., capital de los Estados Unidos de América…
La capital del país nació como una ciudad planificada en 1791, luego de que varias ciudades ostentaran esta posición desde la independencia del país en 1776; se denominó Distrito de Columbia y se dio paso a la nueva ciudad de Washington D.C. al este de Georgetown que ya existía; su nombre se debe al primer presidente del país George Washington y Columbia como referencia a Cristóbal Colon descubridor de América…
Washington DC reúne varias de las cosas más representativas e importantes de la historia mundial, pero también sus alrededores, por lo cual no pueden perderse de visitar: Georgetown, Arlington, Hyattsville, Kensington y Glen Echo Park… Cada uno de ellos tiene más cosas interesantes que ver y visitar.
Hay algunas cosas que debes de tener en cuenta antes de recorrer Washington D.C., como siempre… desde mi punto de vista:
1.- Un mapa de la ciudad para que sepas donde quedan todas las cosas y donde estas tu. Al ser una ciudad súper turística no es difícil conseguir mapas de turistas donde aparecen resaltados los principales puntos de interés, monumentos, iglesias, teatros, parques, entre otros…
2.- Creo que es bueno estar un poco preparado acerca de las cosas que quieres visitar con antelación a su llegada… Seguramente podrán encontrar lo que buscan en los mapas, pero hay tantas cosas que ver que tener una idea de que se quiere visitar ayudara a armar los planes. Por ejemplo: Yo sabía desde antes de llegar que quería conocer la Casa Blanca, Los museos del Smithsoniano (hay 19… yo elegí 3), la casa donde filmaron “El Exorcista”, la tienda de cupcakes del programa DC Cupcakes, entre otros… cosas super especificas que podían ayudarme a armar mis planes de visita.
3.- Por último, algo muy importante… Donde estas ubicado con relación a Union Station (la estación de buses/metro/tren y todo lo que se mueva) y como llegar a la misma. La terminal de Union Station sirve como eje de transporte de muchas maneras, los hoteles envían sus shuttles hasta allí de manera gratuita (algunos), desde aquí inician algunos tours en buses de paseo, muchos metros que conectan la ciudad pasan por aquí, se puede conseguir taxis y trasporte desde este punto y más.
Una buena manera de empezar tu tour es dar una vuelta por la ciudad en los buses de dos pisos para turistas… hay varias empresas y sus paseos abarcan prácticamente toda la ciudad y las ciudades que están cerca… Los tours tienen horas de salidas y llegada, por lo cual es muy importante prestar atención a los horarios de las mismas, en especial si van a visitar los lugares más lejanos como Arlington o Georgetown…
En el centro de Washington, algo que no puedes dejar de visitar es la Casa Blanca, hogar del presidente de los Estados Unidos de América y como diría mi tía sede de las películas con platillos voladores jeje… detrás de la Casa Blanca podemos encontrar el “Mall Nacional”, esta es una gran área turística que reúne los principales museos, monumentos y edificios gubernamentales de la nación… Aquí podrán ver monumentos tan icónicos como el gigantesco monumento a Washington, el memorial de Lincoln, el memorial de Jefferson, entre otros… en esta zona también podrán visitar varios de los museos mas importantes del Instituto Smithsoniano; en total son 19, mis favoritos: el de museo de historia natural (donde se filmo una noche en el museo) y el museo de historia americana… entre los edificios mas importantes que podremos observar están, como habíamos mencionado la Casa Blanca, el Capitolio, los Archivos Nacionales, etc… Como ven… hay mucho que ver… asi que alisten sus zapatos cómodos porque todo está relativamente cerca y lo tendremos que hacer a pie…
A pocos minutos del centro de Washington se encuentra Georgetown… El distrito original donde comenzó DC… Un hermoso lugar que también alberga muchas cosas que también vale la pena conocer… Anímense a caminar por la calle M donde encontraran tiendas de todo tipo: ropa, comida, cafés… En esta zona pueden visitar a las hermanas Katherine y Sophie del show de tv en su Georgetown Cupcakes, tampoco pueden dejar de fotografiar la casa donde se filmo El Exorcista y sus famosas escaleras junto a ella… la casa de Julia Child… el puerto Washington y más…
Cruzando el rio y aunque sea otro Estado… el cementerio de los presidentes mas famosos se encuentra en Arlington – Virginia; aquí esta la tumba de John F Kennedy, el memorial del cuerpo de marina, la tumba de los soldados desconocidos y muchos otros monumentos representativos de la historia del país… También se puede visitar el Pentagono que se encuentra sobre la orilla de Arlington y entre Arlington y Washington esta la isla dedicada al presidente Teodoro Roosvelt…
Como pueden fijarse Washington DC es una ciudad encantadora, llena de historia, arte, conocimiento, tradiciones y más… No se la puede recorrer de manera rápida, hay que tomarse un poco de tiempo para reconocer cada espacio y disfrutarla… Por eso en los próximos capítulos de mi viaje les hablare un poco más acerca de las zonas de la ciudad y que pueden ver… No nos moveremos de aquí aun… nos vemos!

The nation’s capital began as a planned city in 1791, after several cities formerly occupied this position since the country’s independence in 1776; it was called District of Columbia and gave way to the new city of Washington D.C. to the east of Georgetown that already existed; It was named honoring the first president George Washington and Columbia is a reference to Christopher Columbus who discovered America…
Washington DC has several of the most representative and important things in world history, but also its surroundings, which are why you cannot miss visiting: Georgetown, Arlington, Hyattsville, Kensington and Glen Echo Park… Each one has more interesting things to see and visit.
There are some things you should consider before touring Washington DC, as always … from my point of view:
1.- A city map so you know where are all things are and where you are… Being a super turistic town is not difficult to get tourist maps where are highlighted the main points of interest, monuments, churches, theaters, parks, among others …
2.- I think it’s good to be a little prepared about the things you want to visit in advance of your arrival… probably you can find what you on maps, but there are so many things to do that helps to have an idea about what you want to visit to make plans. By example: I knew before arriving that I wanted to see the White House, the Smithsonian museums (there are 19… I chose 3), the house where they filmed «The Exorcist», the cupcakes store from DC Cupcakes tv show, among others… Super specific things that could help me build my travelling plans.
3.- Finally, something very important… Where are you located in relation to Union Station (the terminal for buses/metro/train and everything that moves you around DC) and how to get to it. Union Station serves as a transportation hub in many ways, hotels send their shuttles up there for free (some), several tour busses start from here their rides, many subways connecting the city pass through here, you can get taxis and transportation from this point and more.
A good way to start your tour is a double-decker buses for tourists… there are several companies and their rides cover virtually the entire city and towns that are close… The tours have hours of departure and arrival, so it is very important to pay attention to the times of the same, especially if you are visiting the farthest places like Arlington or Georgetown…
In downtown Washington, something you cannot miss is The White House, home of the President of the United States of America and as my aunt Cecilia would say… the ufo headquarter for movies he he… behind The White House you can find the «National Mall», this is a great tourist area which brings together the main museums, monuments and government buildings… Here you can see monuments as iconic as the giant Washington monument, the Lincoln memorial, the Jefferson memorial, among others… in this area you can also visit several of the most important museums of the Smithsonian Instituth; there are 19 in total but my favorites are: the natural history museum (where one night at the museum was filmed) and the American history museum… among the most important buildings that we observe are, as we had mentioned the White House, the Capitol , the National Archives and more… now you see… there is much to visit… so prepare your comfortable shoes because everything is relatively close and you’ll have to walk…
A few minutes from downtown Washington is Georgetown… The original district where DC began… A beautiful place that also hosts many things you must visit… Encourage walking down M street, here you will find shops of all kinds: clothes, food, cafes… in this area you can also visit Katherine and Sophie, the sisters from tv, in their Georgetown Cupcakes, you cannot miss the house where the Exorcist was filmed and its famous stairs… the house of Julia Child… Washington Harbor and more…
Crossing the river and even if it is another State is the cemetery of the most famous presidents in Arlington – Virginia; here is the grave of John F Kennedy, the memorial Marine Corps, the tomb of the unknown soldiers and many other important monuments of the country’s history… You can also visit the Pentagon set on the shore of Arlington, and between Arlington and Washington is the island dedicated to President Theodore Roosevelt…
As you can see Washington DC is a lovely city, full of history, art, knowledge, traditions and more… You cannot see it in a quickly walking, you have to take a little time to recognize each space and enjoy it… So in the next chapters of my trip I will talk a little more about the areas of the city and what you can see… we will not move from here… see you!
