Avanzaremos un poco más hacia el norte… Para comenzar dejamos atrás Columbia y nos dirigimos hacia Raleigh…

Pero antes de cruzar la frontera entre Carolina del Sur y Carolina del Norte, podremos ver “South of the Border” haciendo relación literal a que estamos pasando de la parte sur de la frontera a la norte… Un conjunto de atracciones bien pensadas para los viajeros, aquí podemos encontrar una feria de atracciones, restaurantes, venta de fuegos artificiales, motel, capilla para casamientos y varias atracciones más… al sur de la frontera…

En aproximadamente 2 horas llegaremos a Raleigh, capital del Estado de Carolina del Norte y conocida como la ciudad de los robles, debido a la gran cantidad de estos árboles que hay en la zona.

Algo que no deben perderse es el Museo de Arte de Carolina del Norte (2110 Blue Ridge Rd), este lugar va a impactarlos desde su llegada, ya que cuenta con hermosos edificios con una grandiosa arquitectura; este museo además tiene exposiciones al aire libre y dentro del mismo, muestras permanentes y temporales de grandes autores… definitivamente un must de Raleigh…

Otro lugar que debes de visitar el Parque Historico Mordecai (1 Mimosa St), en este parque ubicado en pleno centro de la ciudad, podremos encontrar la casa Mordecai, que es el edificio más antiguo de la ciudad; fue construido en 1785 y funciona actualmente como un museo, con grandes jardines, capilla y la casa donde nació el presidente Andrew Johnson, puedes tomar el tour para conocer el lugar, en este les contaran grandes historias…

También podemos visitar la Mansión Ejecutiva de Carolina del Norte (200 N Blount St), residencia oficial del Gobernador y su familia; esta casa fue construida en 1883 y tiene un estilo arquitectónico Reina Anna. Como ya lo habíamos dicho, Raleigh es la ciudad de los robles, así que no muy lejos se encuentra el parque Moore (Moore Square), aquí existe una gran escultura de una bellota gigante, es un punto muy representativo de la ciudad…

Antes de despedirnos de Raleigh podemos visitar el Crabtree Valley Mall (4325 Glenwood Ave), un gran centro comercial con más de 200 tiendas de todo tipo de marcas y productos, también cuenta con un patio de comidas y otros restaurantes, una buena opción para almorzar, recargar baterías y continuar nuestro viaje.

Continuaremos un poco más al norte, para dirigirnos hacia Richmond; esta vez no encontraremos un punto llamativo que nos indique que dejamos el Estado de Carolina del Norte y entramos en Virginia, pero si vamos por la I95 podremos encontrar a pocos metros de la frontera una zona de descanso con el Centro de Bienvenida a Virginia (3683 I95).

Comenzaremos nuestro recorrido visitando el conocido Parque Chimborazo (3201 E. Broad St), este un parque histórico creado en 1874, el parque fue el sitio de Chimborazo Hospital, uno de los mayores hospitales militares del mundo que funcionó entre 1862 y 1865. Se cree que su nombre se debe a la semejanza que encontró un viajero, de esta colina con las colinas que rodean el volcán, a pesar de que su nombre ya se registra en documentos de la Guerra Civil no es sino hasta 1866 en que se registra su nombre oficialmente.

Alejándonos un poco del centro podemos encontrar el Teatro Robinson (2903 Q St), cuyo nombre debe al famoso Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, hijo de Richmond y estrella de Broadway de los años 30, considerado hasta la actualidad como el mejor bailarin de tap del mundo.

Otros edificios dignos de fotografiar son: La Estacion Central de transporte (1500E Main St), abierta originalmente en 1901 y restaurada en 1975 presta servicios de integración y estación para buses, trolley, shuttels, taxis y limosinas. El capitolio del Estado, que se encuentra ubicado en el 1001E Broad St; su diseñador fue Thomas Jefferson, fue inagurado en 1785 y su estilo es Palladian – Republicano Temprano y el Edificio Egipcio ubicado en el 1228 College St que forma parte de la Commonwealth University.

Para abandonar Richmond podemos ver la avenida de los monumentos; una avenida que fue planificada para tener a lo largo de la misma grandes monumentos y estatuas. Como ven, dos capitales de Estado con muchos atractivos… Siguiente destino… Ciudad Capital alla vamos…

In approximately 2 hours we’ll arrive to Raleigh, the state capital of North Carolina and better known as the City of Oaks, due to the large number of these trees that are in the area.

Something that should not be missed is the North Carolina Museum of Art (2110 Blue Ridge Rd), this place is going to impact you since your arrival, it has beautiful buildings with great architecture; this museum also has outdoor exhibitions, an permanent and temporary indoor exhibitions of great authors… definitely a “must” on Raleigh…

Another place you should visit is the Mordecai Historic Park (1 Mimosa St); in this park located in the heart of the city, we find the Mordecai house, which is the oldest building on State; It was built in 1785 and now serves as a museum, with large gardens, chapel and the house where President Andrew Johnson was born, you can take the tour to see the place, in this they tell great stories…

You can also visit the North Carolina Executive Mansion (200 N Blount St), the official residence of the Governor and his family; this house was built in 1883 and has a Queen Anne architectural style. As we have already said, Raleigh is the Oaks city, so not far from here is Moore Square, and there is a large sculpture of a giant acorn, is a very representative point of the city…

Before leaving Raleigh you can visit the Crabtree Valley Mall (4325 Glenwood Ave), a large shopping center with over 200 shops of all kinds of brands and products, also it has a food court and other restaurants, a good choice for lunch, recharge and continue our journey.

We continue a little further north, to go to Richmond; this time we will not find a striking point that tells us we left the State of North Carolina and get into Virginia, but if you go by the I95 you can find a few meters from the border a rest area with the Welcome Center Virginia (3683 I95).

You can begin your journey visiting the famous Chimborazo Park (3201 E. Broad St), this is a historical park created in 1874, and the park was the site of Chimborazo Hospital, one of the largest military hospitals of the world which operated between 1862 and 1865. It is believed its name comes from the similarity founded by a traveler between this hill and the hills surrounding the original volcano, despite its name is recorded in documents of the Civil War is not until 1866 when its name is registered officially.

Siguiendo con nuestro road trip avanzaremos hacia el este, donde encontraremos el particular poblado de Augusta…

Augusta está situada junto al lado del río Savannah, el límite natural que separa Georgia de Carolina del Sur. Fue fundada en 1735 como fuerte y puesto comercial fronterizo; es muy conocida por ser la sede del Torneo de Golf Masters cada primavera.

En un paseo rápido por Augusta no pueden dejar de visitar el Centro Cultural del Sagrado Corazón (1301 Greene St), abierto en 1900 como Iglesia Católica e icono de la ciudad, este es un hermoso edificio ubicado en el distrito histórico; actualmente es el hogar de diversas actividades culturales como conciertos corales, exposiciones de arte, eventos festivos y el festival anual de jardín, así como también del Ballet de Augusta, la Coral Infantil, la Sociedad Coral, la Orquesta Sinfónica y el Consejo de Arte Mayor. El Sagrado Corazón recibe a personas de todo el área del río Savannah y sus visitantes pueden recorrer el lugar de manera gratuita.

En el distrito histórico también podemos visitar la casa de Woodrow Wilson (419 7th St), él fue el presidente número 28 de los Estados Unidos y premio nobel de la paz; nació en Augusta y la casa de su niñez ha sido preservada como monumento histórico de la misma; este es otro de los imperdibles de Augusta.

Muy cerca de allí también podemos ver el famoso “pilar maldito”.El pilar Maldito (200 5th St) fue una vez parte de un mercado del centro de Augusta que existió entre 1830 y 1878. De acuerdo a la leyenda, un predicador quería evangelizar al lado del pilar, pero fue prohibido por las autoridades; entonces él declaró que el mercado sería destruido, y que el pilar junto a él sería el único que testigo que quedaría en pie. Y aparentemente así sucedió en 1878 cuando un tornado lo destruyo por completo quedando de pie solamente el pilar en cuestión. Desde esa ocasión cualquier persona que trate de moverlo o que lo sujete tendrá un final no muy agradable.

A pocas cuadras, llegando a la calle 8 podemos visitar el teatro Imperial (749 Broad St), este teatro abrió en 1918 y fue famoso por presentar vodevil siendo un gran suceso de la época, muchos grandes artistas deben haberse presentado aquí, sin embargo los registros hacen hincapié en la presentación de Charles Chaplin en el año de su apertura.

Desde la acera del teatro podrán ver otro de los referentes de Augusta, el edifico Lamar (753 BroadSt), este edifico fue construido en 1918 y se realizaron adecuaciones en 1976 dándole un aspecto bastante particular, ya que su arquitecto I M Pei se inspiró en las Guerras de las Galaxias y especialmente en el casco de Darth Vader para el mismo, dándole un aspecto sumamente futurista.

Unos pasos más adelante, entre las calles 8 y 9 se encuentra la estatua de James Brown, el padrino del R&B, con éxitos como: I got you (I feel good), It’s a man’s man’s man’s world, sex machine, entre otros. JB consideraba a esta ciudad su hogar y a pesar de no haber nacido en esta, le dedicó muchos de sus éxitos y realizó muchas obras altruistas para su comunidad. La ciudad le retribuyó con todo su cariño y homenajeándolo con una estatua tamaño real en una de las calles más importantes del centro y frente al Augusta Common.

Cruzando el río Savannah dejamos atrás el Estado de Georgia e ingresamos a Carolina del Sur, yendo hacia el norte, en poco tiempo estaremos en la ciudad de Columbia, su capital.

Uno de los imperdibles de Columbia es sin duda el parque Finlay (930 Laurel St), uno de los parques más conocidos en el estado; este parque alberga todo tipo de eventos, desde festivales y reuniones políticas hasta carreras de autos y conciertos de verano, además de muchas más actividades. El parque lleva el nombre de Kirkman Finlay, Alcalde de Columbia, que tenía una visión para revitalizar la zona conocida como la vista, entre la calle principal y el río. Una estatua de Finlay se ha colocado en el parque, que lo muestra sentado en un banco.

Uno de los edificios más hermosos que podrán observar es la Casa de Gobierno de Carolina del Sur (1100 Gervais St); el edificio fue completado en 1907, y tiene un estilo muy parecido al del Capitolio en Washington, en sus alrededores se pueden observar hermosos jardines y estatuas. Otro edificio digno de admirar es la Catedral Episcopal de la Santísima Trinidad (1100 Sumter St), este es el santuario más antiguo de Columbia, data de 1847 y su estilo es gótico.

Antes de dejar Columbia, tenemos que pasar por Five Points, ubicada en Harden Street, esta zona bulliciosa nunca ha perdido su encanto y atractivo. El corazón de Five Points zumba a diario con el tráfico peatonal; ejecutivos disfrutando de un almuerzo al aire libre, artistas pintando cuadros al aire libre, galerías únicas de artesanías, tienda para grandes y pequeños; este distrito comercial conecta el centro con seis barrios de los alrededores. El imperdible… su pileta!

Dos lugares muy lindos e interesantes… les dije que había muchas cosas más que ver… la promesa sigue… Avanzamos hacia el norte para encontrar nuevas aventuras…

Following our road trip we will move to the east, where we’ll find the special town of Augusta…

Augusta is located at the Savannah River side, the natural boundary that separates Georgia from South Carolina. It was founded in 1735 as a Fort and border trading post; It is well known as the home of the Masters Golf Tournament each spring.

In a quick tour around Augusta you can’t miss the Sacred Heart Cultural Center (1301 Greene St), opened in 1900 as a Catholic Church and then became into an icon of the city, this is a beautiful building in the historic district; It is now home to various cultural activities such as choral concerts, art exhibitions, public events and the annual garden festival, as well as Augusta Ballet, the Children’s Choir, the Choral Society, the Symphony Orchestra and the Mayor Arts Council. The Sacred Heart welcomes people from all over the Savannah River area and visitors can tour the site for free.

A few blocks away, reaching 8th Street we can visit the Imperial Theatre (749 Broad St), this theater opened in 1918 and was famous for presenting vaudeville, a great success at that time, many great artists must have presented here, however records emphasize the presentation of Charles Chaplin in the year of its opening.

Crossing the Savannah River left behind the State of Georgia and entered South Carolina, heading north, soon will be in the city of Columbia, the capital of the State.

Another building worth admiring is the Episcopal Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (1100 Sumter St), this is the oldest shrine of Columbia, dates from 1847 and its style is Gothic.

Before leaving Columbia, we have to go through Five Points, located in Harden Street; this bustling area has never lost its charm and appeal. The heart of Five Points buzzes daily with pedestrian traffic; executives enjoying lunch outdoors, artists painting their art, unique crafts galleries, shop for big and small; This connects downtown shopping district with six surrounding neighborhoods. Don’t forget to visit the Fountain!

Two very cute and interesting places… As I told you before there was much more to see… the promise is still on… We’re moving north to find new adventures…

Esta parte del camino es muy especial para mí… ya que visitaremos dos poblados que rememoran mi infancia a través de películas y series…

El primer lugar fue sede de un maravilloso filme… La película comienza con la vida de una mujer llamada Evelyn y su encuentro con una anciana llamada Ninny, ella se encuentra viviendo en un asilo. Ninny relata a Evelyn, a lo largo de la película, una historia ambientada en los años 30 sobre dos mujeres, Idgie y Ruth, que atraviesan toda clase de obstáculos juntas, apoyándose mutuamente, para conseguir así mirar siempre hacia adelante. La película se basa en esta historia hasta hacernos ver que lo que realmente está haciendo la anciana es hablarnos de su propia vida. La película trata sobre todo del valor de la amistad, aunque también nos habla de racismo, machismo y hasta del canibalismo. Así es la maravillosa historia de Tomates Verdes Fritos… deben de leerla y verla al menos una vez en su vida…

La película está basada en el libro Tomates Verdes Fritos y originalmente la historia se desarrolla en Alabama; sin embargo, la filmación de la película se llevó a cabo en Georgia… Así que saldremos de Atlanta con dirección sur-este para recorrer 112km aproximadamente y llegar a uno de los lugares más pintorescos e interesantes de nuestro viaje… el pequeñísimo poblado de Juliette…

En Juliette se recreó el pueblo y café Whistle Stop (443 McCrackin St)… Es impresionante que haya historias que pueden marcar tanto tu vida y que no puedes sacar de tu cabeza, llegar a este lugar es mágico, es vivir todo lo que sentiste durante tanto tiempo, oir su cancion y transportarte a otro mundo, sentir la brisa calida en tu cara, poder imaginar a Idgie y Ruth caminando esas calles, entrando a su café, imaginar a lo lejos el silbido del tren aproximándose por los rieles que aun existen… una experiencia sin igual… vivir realmente lo que viviste por muchos años en tu imaginación y que forma parte de ti

Dentro del café el tiempo se ha detenido. Una vez concluidas las filmaciones, el local fue comprado y se mantiene funcionando como una cafetería, puedes sentarte en las sillas originales, la caja registradora del siglo pasado aun esta, así como los menús pizarra y muchas fotos sobre sus paredes…

Las casas a los lados del café han sido transformadas en pequeñas tiendas de antigüedades, artesanías, bocadillos, recuerdos y salsa para barbecue… Vale la pena descubrir todo tipo de pequeños tesoros en ellas, siempre recuerden: el secreto esta en la salsa… y sino lo creen, pregúntenselo a Frank Bennet.

Tomates Verdes Fritos es una gran película, nos cautivo a mí y a mi hermana desde que éramos muy pequeños… sus grandes diálogos, su lucha por la igualdad, sus encantadores personajes y la fuerza de la amistad fueron elementos que nos transportaron a una Georgia de antaño llena de costumbres e historias… Ahora es tiempo de dejar atrás Juliette y dirigirnos hacia el norte a nuestra siguiente locación…

Luego de recorrer 65km llegamos a Covington. Desde muy pequeño, en compañía de mi primo Hernán, nos convertimos en fans de la serie Los Duques del Peligro; soñábamos ser como ellos… entrar por las ventanas del auto, saltar acantilados, descubrir misterios… definitivamente nuestro programa favorito… Estando tan cerca no había excusa para no pasar por ahí…

Covington es otro pequeño poblado de Georgia y fue sede de la primera temporada de Los Duques del Peligro, antes de que sus filmaciones fueran mudadas a California. En este lugar se filmó toda la serie, imagínense la calles de este lugar transformadas en sets de tv con carros saltando barricadas, persecuciones con disparos y todo el caos correspondiente…

Varias de las escenas más famosas de la serie se filmaron en la calle Clark, frente a la Corte del Condado (1124 Clark St),  el lugar sigue exactamente igual, con sus antiguos edificios de ladrillo que albergan oficinas gubernamentales y que son testigos de las aventuras de Bo, Luke y Daisy.

Covington es conocido también como el Hollywood del sur, ya que en sus calles se han filmado muchas series de televisión y películas además de los Dukes of Hazzard… Entre las más famosas podríamos mencionar: Vampire Diaries, Miracles from Heaven, El vuelo, Sleepy Hallow, Selma, Timothy Green, Footlose, Halloween 2, Sweet Home Alabama, Un Giro del Destino, Mi primo Vinny, Martes 13th 6, entre otros; para tener mas información de este filmográfico pueblo pueden visitar el Centro de Visitantes ubicado en 2101 Clark Street Southwest.

This part of the road is very special to me… we are going to visit two villages that recall my childhood through movies and series…

The first one hosted a wonderful movie… The film begins with the life of a woman named Evelyn and her encounter with an elderly woman named Ninny, she is living in a nursing home. Ninny tells Evelyn, throughout the film, a story set in the 30s about two women, Idgie and Ruth, which cross all obstacles together, supporting each other, to get so always look forward. The film is based on this story; to make us see that it what is really doing the old woman is telling us about her own life. The film is about all of the value of friendship, but also talks about racism, sexism and even cannibalism. So this is the wonderful story of “fried green tomatoes”… You should read it and see it at least once in your life…

The film is based on the book Fried Green Tomatoes and originally the story unfolds in Alabama; however, the shooting took place in Georgia… So we will leave Atlanta with south-easterly direction to travel around 70miles and reach one of the most picturesque and interesting places of our trip … the tiny town of Juliette…

The town and coffee Whistle Stop (443 McCrackin St) is recreated on Juliette… It’s amazing that there are stories that can brand your life and you cannot get out of your head, get to this place is magical, it’s to live everything that you felt during so long, to hear its song and transport you to another world, feel the warm breeze on your face, to imagine Idgie and Ruth walked those streets, entering its coffee, imagine the train whistle approaching the rails -that still exist-… an incomparable experience… to live in real life what you lived for many years in your imagination and that has become a part of you.

Inside the coffee place time has stopped. After completing the filming, the premises were bought and kept working as a cafe, so now, you can sit in the original chairs; the cash register from the last century is still, the blackboard menus and many photos on the walls…

The small houses on coffee sides has been transformed into small shops, you can find antiques, crafts, snacks, souvenirs and sauce barbecue… Worth discovering all sorts of little treasures there and always remember: the secret is in the sauce… and If you don’t believe it, ask to Frank Bennet.

Fried Green Tomatoes is a great movie, as children, my sister and I we were captived for this movie… its great dialogues, their struggle for equality, charming characters and the strength of friendship were elements that transported us to an old Georgia full of mores and stories… Now it is time to leave behind Juliette and head north to our next location…

After traveling 40miles we arrived to Covington. Since I was a small boy, in the company of my cousin Hernán, we became fans of the series The Dukes of Hazard; we dreamed to be like them… enter through the windows of the car, jump off cliffs, and discover mysteries… definitely our favorite show… Being so close there was no excuse not to go out there…

Covington is another small town in Georgia and hosted the first season of The Dukes of Hazard, before their films were moved to California. Here the entire series was filmed, imagine the streets of this place transformed into TV sets with cars jumping barricades, shots and persecutions with all the corresponding chaos…

Several of the most famous scenes of the series were filmed on Clark Street, opposite the County Court (1124 Clark St), the place is exactly the same, with its old brick buildings that house government offices and witness the adventures of Bo, Luke and Daisy…

Covington is also known as the Hollywood of the south, in their streets has been filmed many TV series and movies in addition to the Dukes of Hazzard… Among the most famous I might mention: Vampire Diaries, Miracles from Heaven, Flight, Sleepy Hollow , Selma, Timothy Green, Footloose, Halloween 2, Sweet Home Alabama, A Twist of Fate, My cousin Vinny, Tuesday 13th 6, among others; for more information of this filmic town you can make a stop at the Visitor Center located at 2101 Clark Street Southwest.

Esta vez el camino nos llevará hacia el oeste… Nos dirigiremos hacia Atlanta, capital de Georgia, que se encuentra a 402 kilómetros de Savannah aproximadamente…

Atlanta fue y es uno de los centros de negocios y transporte más importante de los EEUU… Varias grandes batallas tuvieron lugar en sus proximidades, por ejemplo: en septiembre de 1864, durante la guerra confederada fue tomada y posteriormente evacuada por el asedio de las tropas federales, acontecimiento histórico que fue inmortalizado en la novela Lo que el viento se llevó (1936). En la década de los 60 fue el centro desde donde se impulsó el movimiento de los derechos civiles para la población de color. En 1973 Atlanta se convirtió en la primera ciudad importante del sur de Estados Unidos en tener un alcalde negro… Como ven, una ciudad muy interesante para ser visitada…

Si son seguidores de la serie TheWalkingDead, el llegar a Atlanta será muy icónico, ya que el paisaje del horizonte es igual que el de las tomas de la  serie en su primer capítulo, en donde el policía Rick Grimes ingresa a una Atlanta pos apocalíptica…

No es difícil pasar un entretenido día en Atlanta… creo que el mejor lugar para aprovechar el tiempo es el centro de la ciudad, donde podrán ver muchas cosas interesantes… Siguiendo con la onda WalkingDead podemos avanzar por la calle Forsyth (32 Forsyth St NW) donde pueden reconocer varios puntos de filmación de la mencionada serie.

Para comenzar bien el día debemos desayunar… Mis recomendaciones en esta zona son: WaffleHouse(135 Andrew Young International Boulevard Northwest) con deliciosos desayunos tipo americano y el famoso Starbucks (267 Marietta St) con ricas bebidas de café y sándwiches.

Barriga llena, corazón contento… Ahora sí… empecemos a recorrer esta metrópoli por uno de sus lugares más atractivos, el Parque Olímpico Centenario… Este parque público se encuentra en el centro de la ciudad,fue construido como parte de las mejoras para los Juegos Olímpicos de 1996 y está rodeado por los rascacielos más importantes de la ciudad: el Centro CNN, el acuario de Georgia, el Centro Nacional para los Derechos Humanos, el Mundo Coca-Cola, el Georgia Dome, entre otros.

En el parque se encuentra la Fuente de los Anillos, una pileta interactiva con chorros de agua y luces que se mueven al compás de la música que reproducen los parlantes del parque, el show se presenta los 365 del año a las 12:30 15:30 18:30 y 21:30; esta pileta que representa los anillos olímpicos, está rodeada por las banderas de los países participantes en las Olimpiadas de ese año. Hay estatuas de diferentes artistas ubicadas por todo el parque; siendo una de las más llamativas la de Pierre de Coubertin, padre del movimiento olímpico moderno. El parque fue construido con donaciones del público, por esto se puede ver en el piso del parque los ladrillos comprados con dedicatorias o recuerdos de los donantes.Frente al parque se encuentra la rueda SkyView Atlanta (168 LuckieSt NW), una rueda de 60 metros de alto que les permitirá ver el centro de la ciudad en toda su magnitud desde lo alto.

Saliendo del parque hacia el norte encontramos el Mundo Coca-Cola (121 Baker St NW); una exposición permanente que presenta la historia de la compañía; incluye sus conocidos anuncios, así como una gran cantidad de áreas de diversión y atracciones, está localizada en el Pemberton Place, nombrado así en honor del inventor de la Coca-Cola.

Este lugar también es casa del Acuario de Georgia, el segundo más grande del mundo, albergando cientos de especies que residen en sus 38.000 metros cúbicos de agua de mar; el acuario incluye tiburones ballena, ballenas beluga, delfines, manta rayas, pingüinos y mas…

El acuario, que funciona desde el año 2005, está dividido en cinco galerías: La primera exhibición refleja el medio ambiente de los ríos de América del Norte y varias especies de agua poco comunes; también está la galería de delfines nariz de botella y el estadio donde se presentan sus espectáculos; la tercera sección del acuario hace referencia a las aguas frías del Pacifico, cuenta con animales de las regiones polares e incluye las ballenas blancas beluga, nutrias de mar, cangrejos araña japoneses, dragones de mar y pingüinos africanos; Tropical Diverofrece principalmente peces tropicales Indo-Pacíficos, el acuario también cultiva su propio coral vivo, hay también caballitos de mar, anguilas, medusas, pecespayaso, camarones, langostasy muchos otros peces tropicales. La exhibición más grande es Ocean Voyager, esta tiene 24.000 m3 de agua y varios miles de peces. Esta “pecera” mide 87 x 38mts y la profundidad oscila entre 6y 9mts; por lo cual es el mayor hábitat acuático bajo techo en el mundo. Esta exposición además tiene 30mts de túnel bajo el agua y su principal atractivo son los tiburones ballena.

Donde almorzar… un montón de lugares… pero yo almorcé esta vez en un restaurante que parece sacado de una película como Grease… Johnny Rockets (280 LuckieSt NW)… rockola, posters, asientos, música y unas ricas hamburguesas al más puro estilo sesentero y de tomar… coca cola por supuesto…

No pueden despedirse de Atlanta sin antes visitar la Swam House, una hermosa mansión construida en 1928 con una mezcla de estilo renacentista y clásico; es uno de los edificios mas importantes e icónicos de la ciudad y lleva este nombre ya que en muchos de las esculturas y pinturas de la misma, los cisnes son un tema recurrente; más aun si son fans de las películas Juegos del Hambre, ya que los hermosos jardines de está histórica casa se filmaron las escenas de la fiesta nocturna en la segunda parte de la saga, donde Katniss y Peeta terminan su gira de visita a los distritos.

Como ven… Atlanta tiene mucho que ofrecer y muchos lugares para ser visitados… lamentablemente es tiempo de partir… próximo destino… la carretera…

This time the road will lead us to the west … We will go to Atlanta, capital of Georgia, which is 250 miles away from Savannah approximately…

Atlanta was and is one of the major business and transportation centers of US… Several big battles took place here, for example, in September 1864, during the Confederate War, it was taken and subsequently evacuated by the siege of the Federal troops, historical event that was immortalized in the novel Gone with the wind (1936). In the 60s, Atlanta was the center of the movement for civil rights for the black population. In 1973, Atlanta became the first major city in the southern United States to have a black mayor… As you can see, a very interesting city to be visited…

If you are a fan of The Walking Dead series, get to Atlanta will be very iconic, as the landscape of the horizon is the same as the pictures in the series in its first chapter, where the policeman Rick Grimes enters to a post-apocalyptic Atlanta…

Full belly, happy heart … Now … we begin to explore this metropolis by one of its most attractive places, Centennial Olympic Park… This is a public park located in downtown Atlanta;it was built as part of the improvements for the Olympics in 1996 and is surrounded by major city skyscrapers: the CNN Center, the Georgia Aquarium, the National Center for Human Rights, the Coca-Cola World, the Georgia Dome, among others.

At the park you can see the Fountain of Rings, an interactive pool with water jets and lights moving to the beat of music reproduced by the speakers of the park, the show is presented 365 days of the year at 12:30 3:30 6:30 and 9:30; this pool represents the Olympic rings, it is surrounded by the flags of the countries participating in the Olympics that year. There are statues of different artists located throughout the park; one of the most striking is the one of Pierre de Coubertin, father of the modern Olympic movement. Tropical Diver mainly offers Indo-Pacific tropical fishes, the aquarium also cultivates its own live coral, and there are also seahorses, eels, jellyfishes, clown fishes, shrimps, lobsters and many other tropical fishes. The largest exhibit is Ocean Voyager, this contains 6.3 million US gallonsof water and several thousand fish. This «fishbowl» measures284ft × 126ftand the depth ranges between 20 and 30ft; so it is the largest indoor aquatic habitat in the world. This exhibition has also a 100ft underwater tunnel and its main attraction are the whale sharks.

You can not say goodbye to Atlanta without visiting the Swam House, a beautiful mansion built in 1928 with a mixture of Renaissance style and classic; It is one of the most important and iconic buildings in the city and is named because in many of the sculptures and paintings the swans are a recurring theme; even more if you are fan of the Hunger Games movies, as the beautiful gardens of this historic house where the filming set of nightlife scenes party in the second part of the saga, where Katniss and Peeta end their tour visiting the districts.

Un nuevo día… una nueva aventura… Una vez más tomamos el camino con dirección norte y siguiendo por la I-95N en aproximadamente 50 minutos llegaremos a Jacksonville… Aquí haremos una parada para desayunar…

Jacksonville es la última ciudad grande que podremos ver antes de salir de Florida, y ya que estamos por aquí visitaremos la Fuente de la Amistad; al momento de su inauguración fue la fuente iluminada más grande del mundo, está ubicada en St. John River Park en Downtown Jacksonville, funciona desde 1965, tiene 61 metros de diámetro y un hermoso paisaje de la ciudad a sus espaldas.

Ahora si… hora de desayunar… lo haremos en Fox restaurant (3580 St. Johns Ave), una bonita cafetería que ofrece desayunos tradicionales americanos, deliciosos waffles, omelet, sanduches y mas…

Para abandonar Florida, les recomiendo utilizar la ruta I-295N, ya que en el camino se toparán con el magnífico puente Dames Point, un gigantesco puente suspendido por cables de 144 metros de altura, la sensación de vértigo al bajar del mismo es inevitable…

Como ya es costumbre, con dirección norte, aproximadamente en 2 horas estaremos arribando a Savannah… una hermosa ciudad y muy particular a orillas del océano Atlántico, la ciudad más antigua del estado de Georgia y con una zona central enclavada en los fabulosos años 40 y 50 que vale la pena recorrer.

Savannah está considerada una de las ciudades más hermosas de los Estados Unidos, en su parte antigua tiene 21 plazas ornamentales -de las 24 originales que existían- con estatuas, fuentes, grandes árboles y hermosos edificios que los transportarán a los tranquilos 50s. Dados todos estos datos, creo que la mejor manera de recorrer este hermoso lugar es a pie… así que pasaremos el día caminando entre estas hermosas calles e historias antigüas…

Empezaremos nuestro recorrido en una de las primeras plazas… La Plaza Franklin (Franklin Square) donde se encuentra la estatua de los soldados de Haití, quienes ayudaron voluntariamente en la Guerra Revolucionaria Americana; en una de las esquinas de la Plaza está también la Primera Iglesia Bautista Africana, reconocida como la congregación negra más antigua de esta iglesia (23 Montgomery St.).

A continuación caminaremos por la calle West St. Julian, en la zona conocida como City Market, una calle peatonal con muchas tiendas de artesanías, cafés y arte… Les recomendamos visitar la galería de Brian Macgregor (301 W. Oglethorpe Ave) y los increible cuadros que reaccionan a la luz en la galería de Thomas Kinkade (211W Saint Julian Street)… aunque hay muchas más tiendas en este pasaje que pueden descubrir…

Avanzando 2 cuadras llegaremos a la Plaza Ellis (Ellis Square), allí está la estatua de Johnny Mercer, hijo de Savannah y ganador de 4 premios Oscar… Fué el escritor de las famosas “Moon River” cantada por Audrey Hepburn en la película Desayuno en Tiffany’s y «One for my baby –and one more for the road-» de Frank Sinatra… entre otras… grandes canciones que constan en nuestra banda sonora de este artículo…

Canciones y películas tan románticas dan hambre, así que aprovechemos para almorzar un delicioso buffet de autentica comida sureña en Lady and Sons (102W CongressSt)… pollo frito al estilo sureño, puré de papas con gravy, estofado de res, pan de maíz, limonada fresca y pancakes para almorzar… si! Pancakes… una delicia que no pueden perderse!… Y aunque el buffet incluye postre… les recomiendo no perderse los dulces y masas de Goose Feathers Café (39 Barnard St.)

Para seguir nuestro recorrido a pie caminemos ahora hasta la Plaza Wright (Wright Square), aquí está el monumento de William Washington, fundador del primer ferrocarril de Georgia y la tumba de Tomo-Chi-Chi, que fue líder del poblado Yamacraw, que es donde se ubica actualmente Savannah…

Bajando por Bull St. llegaremos a la Plaza Chippewa (Chippewa Square), aquí podremos ver el monumento a James Edward Oglethorpe, fundador de Savannah, en uno de los costados de la Plaza está el Cine Savannah, abierto en 1818, uno de los cines más antiguos de Estados Unidos que aun funciona, esta plaza es muy especial, ya que fue utilizada para filmar el openning y varias escenas de Forrest Gump, sobre todo esa en las que Tom Hanks se sienta en una banca en el parque y dice su famosa frase “la vida es como una caja de chocolates”… El lugar está en Bull St y Hull St, pero la banca fue retirada para conservarla en el museo, en su lugar se encuentra un jardín ornamental, sin embargo, los edificios por los que se ve sobrevolar la ciudad aun están ahí.

Continuando con nuestro paseo visitaremos la Catedral de San Juan el Bautista (222E Harris St) para apreciar sus hermosas torres y vitrales; luego pueden cruzar al cementerio Colonial Park (201 Abercorn St) y fíjense en las fechas de sus tumbas… de otros siglos; la casa Owens-Thomas (123 Abercorn St), la más importante de Savannah por su arquitectura, actualmente funciona como museo y fue declarada monumento histórico nacional desde 1976; el Davenport House Museum (324E State St) que es la primera de varias casas salvadas y restauradas por un grupo de 7 mujeres que se propusieron rescatar la historia de esta ciudad; Emmet Park (4076E Bay St), que es su parque central y junto a este Factors Row, una colección única de edificios de ladrillo rojo, el antiguo centro de comercio para las fabricas de algodón de Savannah; de este a oeste por encima del río, estos enormes edificios de ladrillo se elevan dos o tres tiendas por encima del risco y descienden por tres o más pisos a la orilla del río. Los edificios en la calle Bay han sido reformados para convertirlos en tiendas de antigüedades, posadas históricas y oficinas. Los antiguos almacenes de algodón al nivel de la calle del río se han convertido en bares, restaurantes y tiendas especializadas populares entre los turistas y residentes por igual.

Savannah es un hermoso destino digno de ser visitado… Edificaciones historicas que nos transportan a otras epocas, comida deliciosa y típica del sur del país, momentos y epocas conservados en el tiempo… un lugar dificil de dejar atras… Buen viaje…

A new day… a new adventure… Once again we hit the road with northerly direction and driving along I-95N in about 50 minutes we are going to reach Jacksonville … A stop for breakfast…

Jacksonville is the last big city that we’ll see before leaving Florida, now that we are here we will visit the Fountain of Friendship, when the fountain start operations on 1965, it was the world’s largest illuminated fountain, is located in St. John River Park Downtown Jacksonville, the fountain is 200 feet diameter and has a beautiful landscape of the city at its back. And now… Breakfast time… we are going to Fox restaurant (3580 St. Johns Ave), a nice café serving traditional American breakfast, delicious waffles, omelets, sandwiches and more…

I recommend using the route I-295N to leave Florida, because, on the way, you will see the splendid Dames Point Bridge, a gigantic suspension cables bridge 472 foot high, the feeling of vertigo when lowering of it is inevitable.

As usual… taking the road to the north… In approximately 2 hours we will be arriving to Savannah… a beautifull city and very particular place on the Atlantic Ocean shore, the oldest city in the state of Georgia with a downtown nestled in the fabulous 40s and 50s.

Savannah is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the United States; in its old downtown has 21 squares -originally there were 24- with statues, fountains, large trees and beautiful buildings that transport you to the quiet 50s. Given all these data to you, I think that the best way to explore this beautiful place is by foot… so let’s spend the day walking among these beautiful streets and ancient stories…

We begin our journey in one of the first squares… Franklin Square, here you can see the Haiti soldiers’s statue, who helped voluntarily in the American Revolutionary War; in one corner of the Plaza is also the First African Baptist Church, recognized as the oldest black congregation of this church (23 Montgomery St.)…

Then let’s walk down the West St. Julian Street, also known as City Market, a pedestrian street with many souvenir shops, cafes and art… I recommend you visit the Brian Macgregor Gallery (301 W. Oglethorpe Ave) and Thomas Kinkade Gallery (211W Saint Julian Street), with spectacular pictures that react to light, although there are many more in this passage.

Two blocks ahead we’ll arrive at Ellis Square, where you can find Johnny Mercer´s statue, son of Savannah and 4 times Academy winner… He wrote the famous «Moon River» sung by Audrey Hepburn in the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s and «One for my baby -and one more for the road-» sung by Frank Sinatra… great songs included in our soundtrack…

Songs and romantic movies get you hungry, so let’s take have a delicious lunch buffet of authentic Southern food at Lady and Sons (102W Congress St)… fried Southern-style chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy, beef stew, corn bread, fresh lemonade and pancakes for lunch… yes! Pancakes… a treat not to be missed!… And although buffet includes dessert… I recommend not miss the sweets of GooseFeathers Café (39 Barnard St.)

Let’s walk now until Wright Square, here are the William Washington monument, founder of the first railroad in Georgia and the tomb of Tomo-Chi-Chi, who was the leader of the Yamacraw village where Savannah now stands…

Walking down by Bull St. you will arrive Chippewa Square, here you can see the monument to James Oglethorpe, founder of Savannah, close to the Square the Savannah Movie Theater, opened in 1818, one of the oldest theaters in the United States that still works… This place is very special because it was used to film scenes from Forrest Gump, specially those in which Tom Hanks sits on a bench in the park and says his famous phrase «life is like a box of chocolates»… the place is in Bull St and Hull St, but the bench was taken to the museum, and an ornamental garden was set in this spot, however, the buildings that you see on the movie from the sky are still there.

Then you can visit the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (222 E Harris St) to appreciate its beautiful towers and stained glasses; walk to Colonial Park Cemetery (201 Abercorn St) and take note of the dates of their graves, from other centuries; Owens-Thomas House (123 Abercorn St) the most important house in Savannah by its architecture, now works as a museum and was declared a national historic monument since 1976; the Davenport House Museum (324E State St) is the first house saved and restored by 7 women who set out to rescue the historic houses of the city; Emmet Park (4076E Bay St), the central park and next to this Factor Row, a unique collection of red brick buildings, an ancient trading center for Savannah cotton factories, from east to west over the river, these huge brick buildings rise two or three stores above the ridge and descend three or more floors to the river bank. The buildings on Bay Street have been renovated to turn it into antique shops, historic inns and offices. The old cotton warehouses on the street level of the river have become bars, restaurants and shops, really popular between tourists and residents.

Savannah is a beautiful destination, worth to be visited… historic buildings that transport you to other times, delicious and typical food of the south part of the country, moments and times preserved in time… a difficult place to leave behind… Good travel…

Siguiendo el camino mágico -y caluroso- de adoquines amarillos hacia el noreste, recorreremos aproximadamente 222 kilómetros desde Orlando hasta San Agustín, visitando algunos lugares ocultos y otros no tan visitados en el estado de Florida, una aventura que no se pueden perder…

Saliendo muy temprano de Orlando tomaremos la I-4E por aproximadamente cuarenta minutos hasta encontrar el particular poblado de Cassadaga. Esta es una comunidad conocida especialmente por tener una gran cantidad de médiums y psíquicos entre sus residentes, hasta el punto de llamarla “la capital psíquica del mundo”.

El campo espiritual Cassadaga fue fundado en 1895 por George P. Colby… Al día de hoy, este campo cuenta con el Hotel Cassadaga (355 CassadagaRd), muy conocido por la gran cantidad de fenómenos paranormales que ahí se han suscitado; junto al hotel se encuentra la librería y centro de información, que es además una maravillosa tienda de recuerdos, esoterismo, talismanes, piedras y mas; en este lugar podrás coordinar una lectura de cartas o una sesión con un médium, dependiendo de lo que te llame más la atención… Otros puntos de interés son una hermosa casa victoriana ubicada cerca del hotel (1240 Stevens St) que representa el estilo de fundación del campo, la casa de Anne Stevens (201 East Kicklighter Road) una de las fundadoras del campo y el cementerio del mismo (201 East Kicklighter Road)

El cementerio de Cassadaga tiene una leyenda muy conocida en todo Estados Unidos… esta habla sobre la «Silla del Diablo», una tumba con forma de asiento en la cual hace muchos años supuestamente unos jóvenes en la noche de Halloween vieron a este ser… se dice desde ese entonces que si dejan una lata de cerveza sin abrir en la silla durante la noche y vuelven a la mañana siguiente la lata estará vacía, lo sorprendente es que permanecerá sin abrir… Otra leyenda dice que si eres tan valiente como para sentarte en la silla, se te aparecerá el diablo… Hay muchas historias que rodean a esta silla de ladrillo y todo el cementerio, ya sean verdaderas o falsas, depende de usted decidir si es lo suficientemente valiente como para sentarse en ella… no dejen de visitarlo…

Dejamos atrás el interesante pueblo de Cassadaga y dirigiéndonos hacia la costa, más o menos en 1 hora, podremos encontrar el hermoso faro de Ponce Inlet (4931S Peninsula Dr, Ponce Inlet); este faro es el más alto del estado de Florida, mide 53 metros de alto, tiene 203 escalones y prestó funcionamiento desde 1887 hasta 1970 cuando fue reemplazado por uno más moderno. Actualmente funciona como un museo… Se puede visitar el faro, las 3 antiguas viviendas de los conserjes, el área de las balsas de refugiados y la tienda de recuerdos. Desde la parte superior del faro tendrán una magnifica vista de la bahía… Vale la pena escalar esos 203 escalones y sentirse en una de esas épicas historias como “El faro” o “Por siempre joven”, imaginar el terror que sintieron los protagonistas de “La Niebla”, “El Aro” o la estresante subida en “Vértigo”… No dejen de preguntar por la historia de Nelly, la pequeña gatita negra del Faro…

Manejando por la costa de Florida hacia el norte, nos toparemos con Daytona… Conocida mundialmente por ser sede de las famosas carreras de autos desde 1927, de las vacaciones de primavera y hogar de los amantes de Harley Davidson… Para llegar hasta aquí tendrán dos opciones: La primera es manejar pegado al mar, admirando el paisaje y el océano pero con una velocidad de hasta 25km por hora en ciertas zonas (demasiado lento para mi)… o la segunda opción, alejarse un poco de la costa, tener un paisaje regular y llegar hasta Daytona… Yo voto por la segunda!

Hay lugares muy emblemáticos en Daytona que deben visitar y otros bastante curiosos a los cuales vale la pena echar un ojo, como por ejemplo la capilla drive-in, un autocinema convertido en iglesia cristiana y desde donde puede oir el sermón sin bajar de tu auto mediante audífonos y ver al sacerdote en la pantalla gigante… Ya dentro de Daytona no deben dejar de visitar su tradicional letrero ubicado aproximadamente en el 301S de Atlantic Ave, luego a visitar el Daytona Beach Boardwalk, un lindo paseo marino, allí podrán visitar el conocidisimo Joe’s Crab Shack, un restaurante muy tradicional y especializado en cangrejos y mariscos; también hay varios restaurantes con otros tipos de comida, heladerías, el band Shell para conciertos al aire libre, un parque de diversiones, los teleféricos que pasan de ida y vuelta por encima de todo el muelle, entre otras atracciones.

Dejando atrás Daytona y con la brújula indicando el norte nos dirigimos hacia San Agustín…

San Agustín es la ciudad más antigua de asentamiento español ocupada hasta la actualidad, fue fundada en 1565 por el español Pedro Menéndez de Avilés… Este poblado de 12.000 habitantes es uno de los lugares más hermosos que podrán conocer… Podrían comenzar su recorrido por la Catedral Basílica ubicada en el 38 Cathedral Pl, cruzando la calle podrán ver un poco de la historia de esta ciudad en el Government House Museum (48 King St)… La calle peatonal Saint George es perfecta para continuar su recorrido, llena de edificios antiguos estilo español, tiendas de recuerdos, artesanías, arte, comida, helados y la escuela más antigua de EEUU (14 St. George St.), construida alrededor de 1716 o al menos esa es la fecha de la que datan sus primeros registros…

En Saint George también se puede tomar el trolley tour, un paseo en trolley que los llevara a recorrer los lugares más representativos y atractivos de este lugar, con opción a bajar en ciertas paradas, recorrer la zona y volver a subir para dirigirse hacia el siguiente destino… Si desean continuar su recorrido a pie les recomiendo llegar hasta el final de Saint George St., donde están las antiguas puertas de la ciudad y luego bajar por Orange St. hasta la «Authentic Old Drugstore» (31 Orange St.), una autentica droguería de 1700, con figuras de cera recordando como se llevaba la medicina antigua…

Nada como terminar el día en una tranquila banca junto al Castillo de San Marcos (1S Castillo Dr)… Un hermoso atardecer, la brisa acariciando tu rostro y como dirían en Titanic… hacer que cada día cuente!… un nuevo destino nos espera pronto…

Following the magical –and hot- yellow brick road to the northeast, will travel about 138 miles from Orlando to Saint Augustine, visiting some hidden places and some not so popular in the state of Florida, an adventure you will not lose…

Leaving Orlando very early you’ll take the I-4E for about forty minutes to find the special town of Cassadaga. This is a community known especially for having a lot of mediums and psychics among its residents, to call it «the psychic capital of the world».

The spiritual field Cassadaga was founded in 1895 by George P Colby… Today, you will find in this area the Cassadaga Hotel (355 Cassadaga Rd), well known for the large number of paranormal phenomenon that have arisen there; next to the hotel is the library and information center, which is also a wonderful souvenir shop, esotericism, talismans, stones and more; in this place you can coordinate a card reading or a session with a medium, depending on what calls you more attention… Other attractions are a beautiful Victorian house located near the hotel (1240 Stevens St) representing the style of foundation field, the home of Anne Stevens (201 East Kicklighter Road) one of the founders of the field and its cemetery (201 East Kicklighter Road)

Cassadaga Cemetery has a well-known legend across America… this speaks about the «Devil’s Chair», a tomb-shaped seat in which many years ago some young guys, at a Halloween night, they saw this near the grave… since then, people say, that if you leave an unopened beer can on the chair overnight and return the next morning the can is empty, and remain unopened … Another legend says that if you’re brave enough to sit in the chair, the devil will appear to you… There are many stories surrounding this brick chair and the whole cemetery, whether true or false is up to you to decide if you’re brave enough to visit it…

Leaving the interesting town of Cassadaga and heading towards the coast, more or less in 1 hour, we can find the beautiful Ponce Inlet lighthouse (4931S Peninsula Dr); this lighthouse is the highest in the state of Florida, is 174 feet high and has 203 steps and provided operation from 1887 until 1970 when it was replaced by a more modern one. Now it serves as a museum… You can visit the lighthouse, the 3 old houses of the janitors, the area of refugee rafts and a souvenir shop. From the top of the lighthouse you’ll have a magnificent view of the bay… worth climbing those 203 steps and feeling in one of those epic stories like «The Lighthouse» or «Forever Young», imagine the terror felt by the protagonists of «Fog”, «the Ring» or the stressful rise in «Vertigo»… Do not forget to ask about the story of Nelly, the little black kitten from the Lighthouse…

Driving along the coast of Florida to the north, we will find Daytona … Known for hosting the famous racings since 1927, Spring Breaks and home of Harley Davidson’s lovers… You have to options to get there: the first is to drive next to the sea, admiring the scenery and the ocean but with a speed up to 15 miles in certain areas (too slow for me) … or a second option, to get away from the coast, have a regular landscape and get to Daytona faster… I vote for the second one!

There are very emblematic places in Daytona you should visit and some quite curious to which it is worth taking a look, such as the drive-in chapel, a drive-in converted into a Christian church and from where you can hear the sermon without leaving your car through headphones and see the priest on the big screen… Once inside Daytona you should not miss the traditional sign located approximately in the 301S Atlantic Ave, then to visit the Daytona Beach Boardwalk, a cute pier, you can visit the famous Joe’s Crab Shack, a very traditional restaurant, specialized in crab and seafood; there are also several restaurants with other types of food, ice cream parlors, the band shell for outdoor concerts, an amusement park, cable cars passing back and forth over the entire pier, among other attractions.

Leaving behind Daytona and with your compass indicating north, we head towards St. Agustine…

St. Augustine is the oldest Spanish settlement city occupied until present, it was founded in 1565 by Pedro Menendez de Aviles… This town of 12,000 inhabitants is one of the most beautiful places you can visit… You could start your tour at the Basilica Cathedral located at 38 Cathedral Pl, crossing the street you may see a bit of the history of this city at the Government House Museum (48 King St)… the Saint George pedestrian street is perfect to continue your journey, full of old Spanish buildings style, shops, souvenirs, handicrafts, art, food, ice cream, and the oldest school in the US (14 St. George St.) built around 1716 or at least what their first date records dating…

In Saint George you can also take the trolley tour, you can take a ride in the trolley to visit the most important places and attractions of this place, with an option to hump off at certain stops, go back and move to the next destination … If you prefer your tour as a walking tour, I recommend you reach the end of Saint George St., where the old city gates are and then down to Orange St. till the “Authentic old drugstore” (31 Orange St.), a real drugstore from 1700 with wax figures recalling how ancient medicine was taking …

Nothing like ending the day in a quiet bench near Castillo de San Marcos (1 S Castillo Dr)… A beautiful sunset, the breeze caressing your face and, as they say in Titanic… make every day count!… A new destination expecte us soon…

ORLANDO… algo más que Disney /something more than mousetown

La ciudad de Orlando es conocida mundialmente por ser la sede de los mas fantásticos parques temáticos de este lado del mundo; entre los más visitados podemos mencionar Walt Disney World inaugurada en 1971 y que el día de hoy aloja 6 parques temáticos; 2 parques de Universal Studios, Legoland, SeaWorld, Busch Gardens, varios parques acuáticos, entre otros.

Sin embargo, a pesar de que los parques son su mayor atractivo, Orlando también nos ofrece una hermosa zona histórica, outlets con grandes marcas, diversión y relax… una ciudad llena de magia.

Orlando Downtown es el corazón histórico y de negocios de Orlando, lejos del bullicio de los parques la evolución de la arquitectura comercial es evidente y paseando por las calles del centro histórico se atraviesan diferentes estilos que representan seis décadas, desde los inicios de los años cuarenta.

Pueden empezar el recorrido en Old Orlando Railroad Depot (76W Church St.) un hermoso edificio construido en 1890 como estación de trenes y que actualmente alberga bares, restaurants y centro de entretenimiento; desde este punto y descubriendo las calles del centro, llegaremos hasta Thorton Park. Primero caminaremos por E Church St. donde podrán apreciar la hermosa arquitectura de la ciudad; subimos por South Orange Av. donde nos toparemos con el Cobb Plaza Cinema Café; cines, restaurantes, tiendas de arte son los mayores atractivos de esta zona; por esta calle llegaremos hasta E Central Blvd por donde caminaremos hasta el Lago Eola, aquí podremos disfrutar de botes cisnes de pedales, alimentar a los cisnes y otras aves, disfrutar de música en el anfiteatro o sencillamente relajarse en un hermoso entorno de flores y una vista espectacular de Orlando; junto a este, Thorton Park sobre Washington St., un lugar especial para pasar un domingo, aquí hay un mercado de puestos locales con comida y productos excelentes, mucha gente, música callejera, restaurantes, bares y más.

Otro punto de interés en la ciudad es el International Drive, este es un colorido boulevard que se extiende por casi 23 kilómetros, pone a su disposición docenas de tiendas especializadas, un i-trolley para facilitar su recorrido, variedad de tiendas exclusivas en su Prime Outlets Orlando, un conjunto de 180 tiendas con excelentes rebajas, comidas variadas, atracciones y vida nocturna; uno de los puntos más llamativos es el I-Drive 360, el conjunto donde está ubicado el Orlando Eye, una rueda enorme de 120mts de alto, desde donde se ve toda la ciudad desde cómodas cabinas con aire acondicionado; en este complejo también podrán encontrar un acuario y un museo con personajes de cera, pueden conseguir entradas a las tres atracciones por $49.

Si tienes pocos días para visitar los parques o tu presupuesto es reducido, te aconsejo revisar las páginas web de los mismos y escoger la mejor opción, además comprando en línea encontrarás mejores precios que en las boleterías o descuentos especiales.

Nosotros solo teníamos 2 días para visitar los parques, por lo cual decidimos visitar uno de Disney y uno de Universal. Si es tu primera vez en Disney yo te recomendaría empezar por Magic Kingdom, hogar de la magia. Prepárate para pasar el día entero en sus instalaciones, juegos, shows, atracciones, los personajes, una locura total! Como pueden hacer todo lo que tienen que hacer?… sencillo… los mapas en la entrada y en las tiendas te indican donde queda cada atracción y si miras detalladamente también están los horarios de los desfiles, las calles por las que van a pasar, los lugares donde puedes tomarte fotos con los personajes, los horarios de los conciertos, shows, películas y demás… Si planificas todo al entrar, no te perderás de nada… OJO! No puedes irte temprano del parque… el desfile de luces, el show del castillo y los juegos artificiales son la cereza del pastel y esto sucede cerca de las 22:00.

Para visitar Universal yo te recomendaría comprar la entrada de visita de los dos parques, ir temprano y en día de semana, los fines de semana las filas son mucho más largas… Los parques de Universal me parecen más pequeños que los de Disney, por eso pueden aprovechar el dia para recorrer los dos… Nosotros recorrimos Island of Adventure, lo mejor de todo la zona de Harry Potter, visiten también la Aventura de Poseidón, el paseo de Jurassic Park y Popeye… Si te animas a visitar los dos parques el Expreso de Hogwarts los llevará de un parque a otro… En Universal Studios Florida podrán encontrar otras atracciones como: Transformers, Twister, Terminator, Simpsons y muchas más.

Recomendaciones:
Una buena noche de sueño anterior a tu visita a los parques
Zapatos cómodos, vas a caminar horas y las filas siempre son largas
Ropa cómoda, olvidate de los jeans y cosas elegantes, unos shorts y camiseta

Días muy entretenidos en Orlando, pero es tiempo de continuar el camino… Saliendo de Orlando continuamos por la costa hacia el norte… visitaremos algunos lugares escondidos hasta llegar a la frontera entre Florida y Georgia…

The city of Orlando is known worldwide as the home of the most fantastic theme parks on this side of the world; among the most visited we can mention Walt Disney World opened in 1971 and today house of 6 theme parks; 2 from Universal Studios, Legoland, SeaWorld, Busch Gardens, several water parks, among others.

However, even though the parks are the main attraction, Orlando also offers a beautiful historic area, outlets with big brands, fun and relax … a city full of magic.

Orlando Downtown is the heart of the historic and business district of Orlando, away from the bustle of the parks, evolution of commercial architecture is evident and strolling the streets of the historic center you can see the different styles representing six decades, from the early forties to now.

You can start your tour at Old Orlando Railroad Depot (76W Church St.) a beautiful building built in 1890 as a railway station and which now is house for bars, restaurants and entertainment centers; from this point and discovering the downtown streets, we’ll reach Thorton Park. First walk in E Church St. where you can appreciate the beautiful architecture of the city; we are going up to South Orange Avenue where we will find the Cobb Plaza Cinema Café, cinemas, restaurants, art shops are the main attractions of this area; by this road we arrive to E Central Blvd where we walk to Lake Eola, here you can enjoy swans paddleboats, feed the swans and other birds, enjoy music in the amphitheater or simply relax in a beautiful setting of flowers with an spectacular view of Orlando; next to this, Thorton Park on Washington St., a special place to spend a Sunday, here’s a local market stalls with food and excellent products, many people, street music, restaurants, bars and more.

Another point of interest in the city is the International Drive, this colorful boulevard stretches for almost 14 miles, it offers dozens of specialty shops, an i-trolley for easy travel, a variety of unique shops in their Prime Outlets Orlando, a set of 180 stores with excellent sales, varied meals, attractions and nightlife; one of the most striking points is the I-Drive 360, the set where is located the Orlando Eye, a huge wheel of 390 feet high from where the whole city is seen from comfortable cabins with air conditioning; in this complex you can also find an aquarium and a museum with wax figures, you can get tickets for the three attractions for $49.

If you have a few days to visit the parks or your budget is limited, I suggest reviewing the websites of them and choose the best option, besides buying online you will find better value than the box office or discounts.

We had only 2 days to visit the parks, so we decided to visit one from Disney and one from Universal. If this is your first time at Disney I recommend you start with Magic Kingdom, home of magic. Be prepared to spend the entire day at their facilities, games, shows, attractions, characters, total madness!… How you can do everything you have to do?… simple… at the entrance and in the shops you can find maps, those indicate where each attraction is and if you look in detail are also times of parades, streets to see it, where you can take photos with Disney characters, schedules for concerts, shows, movies and everything else … so if you plan it from the star, you will not miss anything … ATTENTION! You can not leave the park early … the parade of lights, the show at the castle and the fireworks are the cherry on top and this happens about 10pm.

To visit Universal I recommend you to buy the two parks entrance, go early and on weekdays, weekends rows are much longer … The Universal parks seem smaller than Disney, so they can take advantage of the day to tour the two of them… We visited Island of Adventure, best of all the Harry Potter area, yopu can also visit the Poseidon Adventure, ride Jurassic Park and Popeye … If you dare to visit the two parks Hogwarts Express will take you from one park to another … at Universal Studios Florida you will find other attractions such as: Transformers, Twister, Terminator, Simpsons and more.

A good night’s sleep prior to your visit to the parks
Comfortable shoes, you are going to walk hours and the lines are always long
Comfortable clothes, forget jeans and stylish things, shorts and shirt is the cloth
A backpack with supplies

Remember where you park the car into the parking lot… one option is to take a picture of the location and parking data so you will not forget or lose.

Very entertaining days in Orlando, but now it’s time to continue the journey … Leaving Orlando we continue along the coast to the north … visiting some hidden places till reach the border between Florida and Georgia …

Orlando está separado de Miami por 386 kilómetros aproximadamente; si tomamos la vía lenta bordeando la costa, en pocos minutos estaremos en la playa Deerfield, una pequeña ciudad muy agradable… mar azul, restaurantes, historia y algo muy especial… su muelle de pesca… el cual parece sacado de unas de esas postales de ensueño. El “Muelle Internacional de Pesca” tiene casi 300 metros de longitud y por solo $1 pueden recorrerlo y adentrarse un poco en las aguas transparentes del Atlántico; si son fanáticos de la pesca, pagando una tarifa de $4 estarán  autorizados a pasar el día haciendo uso de sus amplios balcones.

Si salieron temprano puede que no hayan desayunado; justo frente al muelle se encuentra Deerfield Beach Café, abierto las 24 horas, 202NE 21St Ave,  este lugar es famoso por su ambiente amistoso y sus desayunos, muy recomendadas sus tostadas francesas, sus wafles y su key lime pie; si tu hambre es un poco mayor, anímate a visitar BurguerFi, 2009NE 2nd St, no dejen de probar la Breakfast All Day Burguer; carne, queso, tocino, miel de maple, huevos, hash brown, cebollas asadas y salsa de tomate; lo tiene todo!

No se vayan de Deerfield sin caminar por la playa de arena blanca y meter sus pies en el agua. Si les queda tiempo de recorrer el área pueden visitar Deerfield Beach Old School, la escuela más antigua de la zona, construida en 1920 y transformada actualmente en un pequeño museo, está ubicada a 10 minutos del muelle, en 323NE 2nd St.

Siguiendo el camino de la costa hacia el norte llegaremos en unos 15 minutos a Boca Ratón… Al llegar pueden visitar el Royal Palm Place, 101 Plaza Real South, los lugareños lo conocían también como Plaza Rosada y dicen que ha estado allí desde siempre; este centro comercial al aire libre reúne restaurantes, salones de arte, tiendas de ropa, joyerías, novedades, entre otros; es ideal para pasear siempre y cuando no haga demasiado calor, sino no podrán disfrutar de las muchas esculturas y piezas de arte repartidas por todo el lugar. Los fines de semana se organiza un mercado de granjas en los parqueaderos, allí se ofrecen quesos artesanales, vegetales, pasta fresca y más.

Otra parada obligatoria en Boca es Mizner Park, 327 Plaza Real, un lugar hermoso arquitectónicamente hablando,  grandes áreas verdes, palmeras, elegantes edificios, tiendas de todo tipo; es el lugar perfecto para parar por café o un helado; dentro del área del complejo está el Museo de Arte de Boca Ratón, el cual pueden visitar también.

Es hora de almorzar y propongo probar la comida caribeña… The Caribbean Grill, 1332NW Boca Raton Blvd, es un lugar pequeño y de ambiente familiar, con todo el sabor de los platos cubanos a buen precio; ropa vieja, yuca con mojo, frejoles, moros con cristiano, pollo a la parrilla y el que más me gustó… rabo de toro en una deliciosa salsa… Imperdible!

Al salir de Boca deben visitar Gumbo Limbo, 1801N Ocean Blvd, un centro de conservación para tortugas marinas… una linda experiencia, muy educativa y además entretenida. La donación es de solamente $5 y podrás tener acceso a todas las áreas de la reserva; en esta podrán recorrer amplios patios con plantas endémicas, jardines de mariposas, peceras de observación y una amplia variedad de animales marinos. Totalmente recomendada.

Siguiendo hacia el norte atravesaremos las famosas playas de West Palm Beach antes de desviarnos hacia la parte central del Estado de Florida para encaminarnos hacia nuestro destino: Orlando, al cual llegaremos en unas 2 horas y media aproximadamente.

Veremos que nueva aventura nos espera…

Orlando is separated from Miami by approximately 240 miles; if you take the slow route along the coast in a few minutes you’ll be in Deerfield Beach, a very nice small town… blue sea, good restaurants, history and something very special … its fishing pier … which looks like something out of one of those dream postcards. «International Fishing Pier» is almost 976 foot long, for just $ 1 you can go around and enjoy a little way of its clear waters from the Atlantic Ocean; if you’re a fishing fan, for $ 4 you will be allowed to spend your day on its spacious balconies.

If you woke up early maybe you didn’t have breakfast; just in front of the pier, Deerfield Beach Café is open 24 hours, 202NE 21St Ave, this place is famous for its friendly atmosphere and nice breakfasts, highly recommended their french toast, waffles and their key lime pie; if your hunger is a bit higher, be encouraged to visit BurguerFi, 2009NE 2nd St, do not forget to try the Breakfast All Day Burger; meat, cheese, bacon, maple syrup, eggs, hash brown, grilled onions and tomato sauce; it has it all!

Don’t leave Deerfield without walking on the beach of white sand and dip your feet in the water. If you have time to tour the area, you can visit Deerfield Beach Old School, the oldest school in the area, built in 1920 and now transformed into a small museum, it is located 10 minutes from pier in 323NE 2nd St.

Following the coast road north you’ll arrive in about 15 minutes to Boca Raton … Upon arrival you can visit the Royal Palm Place, 101 Plaza Real South, the locals also knew it as Pink Plaza and say it has been there forever; this outdoor mall have great restaurants, art galleries, clothing stores, jewelry, novelties, among others; it is ideal for long walks, if not too hot, or you’ll be not able to enjoy the many sculptures and art pieces scattered all over the place. On weekends a farm market is organized in the parking lots, there you can buy artisan cheese, vegetables, fresh pasta and more.

Another obligatory stop is Boca’s Mizner Park, 327 Plaza Real, a beautiful place architecturally speaking, large green areas, palm trees, elegant buildings, shops of all kinds; It‘s the perfect place to stop for coffee or ice cream place; close to this is the Art Museum of Boca Raton, which you can also visit.

It’s lunchtime and I propose to try Caribbean food … The Caribbean Grill, 1332NW Boca Raton Blvd, is a small place with family atmosphere and all the flavor of Cuban cuisine at reasonable prices; ropa vieja, yuca con mojo, frejoles, moros con cristiano, chicken grilled and my favorite… rabo de toro in a delicious sauce … Unmissable!

Leaving Boca you should visit Gumbo Limbo, 1801N Ocean Blvd, a conservation center for sea turtles … a nice experience, very educational and also entertaining. The donation is only $ 5 and you’ll have access to all areas of the reserve; you will walk by large courtyards with native plants, butterfly gardens, fish tanks for observation and a wide variety of marine animals. Fully recommended.

Continuing north we go though the famous beaches of West Palm Beach before straying into the central part of the State of Florida to move towards our destination: Orlando, we will arrive in about 2 hours and a half.

MIAMI – TRAS BASTIDORES / BACKSTAGE

Pude darme cuenta que muchas páginas hablan de lo divertido que es un lugar, lo entretenido de visitarlo o lo rico de comer en el restaurante de moda, pero nadie te dice lo más importante… ¿COMO LLEGAR?… Para mí fue toda una lucha descubrir cómo llegar a ciertos lugares utilizando el GPS sin tener las direcciones, así que para facilitarles un poco el viaje… he aquí algunos lugares que a mi parecer son interesantes de ver y visitar.

Como les contaba anteriormente… En Miami eres nulo si no tienes un auto a la mano, existe el transporte público pero hay que esperar bastante entre un bus y otro, además de ser un servicio algo lento… Les recomiendo alquilar un auto por internet y así poder retirarlo al momento de arribar al aeropuerto… Dile sí al GPS… a mi parecer son mucho mejores que los del teléfono o al menos más cómodo para mí… una buena inversión. Empecemos nuestro Miami tour…

Miami – Downtown

Lo primero que debemos hacer es parquear el auto. Los parqueos y parquímetros son bastante caros en todo EEUU, un sitio ideal para parquear, cuando visiten el downtown, es junto al centro comercial Bayside, tienen una tarifa regulada por varias horas de estacionamiento y pueden ir caminando a alguna estación del metro rail.

Luego yo empezaría por subirme al metro rail y dar un vistazo a la ciudad desde las alturas, hacer varios cambios en estaciones y así ver un poco de la arquitectura y del movimiento de la misma; el centro es una zona de tiendas de electrónicos, ropa, recuerdos y demás, muy entretenida durante el día; al igual que el resto de la ciudad, existe una gran influencia latina, por lo cual pueden disfrutar comida de toda América en esa zona. Un tour a pie siempre viene bien; al bajar del metro rail pueden ubicar el Miami Tower; así que vamos:

1. Miami Tower – 100SE 2nd St– Ya les conté de este edificio.
2. Olympia Theater – 174 E FlaglerSt – Histórico teatro de Miami abrió en 1926 presentando películas mudas; estrellas como Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Luciano Pavarotti, Etta James y The Police se han presentado aquí y sigue en funcionamiento.
3. Miami-Dade County Courthouse – 73 W Flagler St – Palacio de Justicia de Miami
4. HistoryMiami–101 W Flagler St – Museo de la ciudad
5. Gesu Catholic Church – 118 NE 2nd St – La iglesia católica más antigua de Miami, fue construida en 1896.
6. Bayside Marketplace – 401 BiscayneBlvd – Ya les comenté lo entretenido que es Bayside.

Miami – South Beach
Esta es una de las playas más concurridas, icónicas y famosas de Miami, un lugar que nunca pasa de moda, al que se va para ver y ser visto, por eso siempre se encuentra repleta de personas en busca de diversión. En esta zona encontrarán la famosa calle Ocean Drive, una de las zonas más populares; se trata de un paseo marítimo donde se hacen realidad todos los tópicos sobre Miami; patinadores en las calles, cuerpos esculturales, playas de ensueño, restaurantes, shows callejeros, cócteles, música a todo volumen y sus famosos edificios con estilo Art Decó. El Art Decó es un movimiento artístico que surgió en el año 1920 y tuvo su máximo apogeo durante la Gran Depresión, este estilo se caracteriza principalmente por la geometría elemental (cubos, esferas y líneas rectas). Debido a todo esto, Ocean Drive es un mito de la cinematografía americana que ha servido como escenario de muchas conocidas películas como Scarface, Miami Vice o Birdcage.

Pueden recorrer esta calle admirando sus famosos edificios, aquí varios de los más reconocidos: Park Central Hotel (Ocean Drive No 630), Johnny Rockets (No 728) Lugar de filmación de Scarface, Colony Hotel (No 736), Breakwater Hotel (No 940), Art Deco District Welcome Center (No 1001), Casa Casuarina (No 1116) Casa donde fue asesinado el diseñador Gianni Versace, Leslie Hotel (No 1244), The Carlyle – Lugar de filmación de Bircage de Robin Williams (No 1250), Crescent Hotel (No 1400) y Mc Alpin Hotel (No 1424). Pues como toda gran ciudad, en esta puedes conseguir todo lo que puedas imaginar y saborear, depende de tus gustos y tu presupuesto.

Si estas en el downtown puedes hacer un alto al paseo a pie y visitar Fratelli Milano (213 SE First St), comida italiana de excelente calidad, si prefieres lo Mexicano la opción de Lime (7 West Flagler St) es muy buena; siempre tendrás a la mano igualmente Burguer King (50 W Flagler St ) o  o Jimmy John’s (47 W Flagler St)… Si deseas esperar a terminar el paseo en Bayside puedes encontrar restaurantes de todo presupuesto y un patio de comidas.

Si estas por South Beach los recomendables son: The Clevelander (1020 Ocean Drive) ensaladas, sanduches, hamburguesas y más; Mom’s New York Pizza (1059 Collins Ave) y Johnny Rockets (No 728 Ocean Drive) hamburguesas clásicas.

I realized that many pages talking about how attractive a place is, how fun is to visit it or how delicious eating in a trendy restaurant, but nobody tells you most importantly … HOW TO GET? … For me it was a whole struggle to find how to get to certain places without having the GPS directions, so to facilitate a little your trip … Here some places that I think are interesting to see and visit…

As I told you earlier … In Miami you are no one if you do not have a car at hand, there is public transport but there is a long wait between a bus and another, besides being a slow service … I recommend renting a car online and so you can take it when arriving at the airport … Say yes to GPS … I think they are much better than those on the phone or at least more comfortable for me … a good investment. Let’s start our tour Miami …

Miami – Downtown

The first thing to do is park the car. The parking and park payment machines are quite expensive throughout the US, an ideal place to park when visiting the downtown is next to the Bayside Marketplace, they have a regulated fare parking for several hours and can walk to a metro rail station.

Then I would start getting on the metro rail and take a look at the city from above, make several changes in stations and that way see a bit of the architecture and movement of the place; downtown is an area of electronic stores, clothes, souvenirs and others, very entertaining during the day; like the rest of the city, there is a strong Latin influence, so you can enjoy food from all Latinamerica in the area. A walking tour is always good; getting off the metro rail you can see the Miami Tower; so let’s go:

Miami – South Beach

This is one of the most popular, iconic and famous beaches of Miami, a place that never goes out of style, here you can see and be seen, it is always full of people looking for fun. In this area you will find the famous Ocean Drive, one of the most popular areas; It is a promenade where you actually see all the cliches about Miami; skaters on the streets, sculpted bodies, idyllic beaches, restaurants, street shows, cocktails, blaring music and its famous Art Deco buildings. Art Deco is an artistic movement that emerged in 1920 and had its peak during the Great Depression, this style is mainly characterized by elementary geometry (cubes, spheres and straight lines). Because of all this, Ocean Drive is a myth of American cinema that has served as the setting for many famous films as Scarface, Miami Vice or Birdcage.
