As I said… Whashington DC is really a beautiful city… full of interesting things, beautiful places, history and more… Today we tour downtown… my idea… tour a part by car and the other part by walk…
One of the advantages of this city is that you can connect almost everywhere by Metro, which as a tourist is an advantage to visit the city without having to use your car and think about where to park everywhere… Another advantage is that taking a taxi is not as expensive as other cities like New York…
Repeating… comfortable shoes, water bottle, bag with supplies and eager to see a lot…
I’ll start my tour on the famous Union Station (50 Massachusetts Ave. NE) and as I told you, here you can stock up on supplies, this station has clothing stores, supermarket, restaurants and the well known tourist buses to see the city… if you want, you can buy your tickets here for your tour service but I think this day is best done by foot…
Leaving Union Station we can take the E Street to get to the very White House and although the UFO is not parked on the roof we can admire the most famous presidential house of the world…
Getting down E Street we will encounter Judiciary Square (457 E Street NW) where we can appreciate its beautiful Panthers guarding, the statue of Sir William Blackstone, the Memorial Darlington Fountain and more; this square is surrounded by several of the most important buildings relating to legal issues, such as the Law School from Georgetown University, the Superior Court of the Columbia District and the Metropolitan Police Department, among others… Upon reaching 8th Street turn right and you can visit the Smithsonian American Art Museum (8th and F Streets NW), a little ahead the interesting Spy Museum (800 F St. NW), you can see Madam Tussauds Museum also (1001 F St NW ) with its wax figures; on 10th Street is Saint Patrick Church (619 10th St NW) and the infamous Ford’s Theatre (511 10th Street NW) where Abraham Lincoln was killed… if you continue walking down the F Street you’ll F get to the door of The White House.
After make some selfies with The White House and remember famous movies filmed in this location as The American President or Independence Day, you can walk down the 17th street and reach Constitution Avenue where you can see the magnificent Washington Monument; it was opened in 1884 and its 170 meters high are impressive and best of all: you can visit it!… to get into this monument is free, but to climb up the tower you must get up very early because the tickets to access it are delivered around 7am…
The Washington Monument is on the National Mall, a designated area to expose monuments, memorials and museums that recall the history of the United States. From Washington Monument we’ll move to the Lincoln Memorial; on your way you’ll see the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the World War II Memorial, among others… until arrive to the impressive Lincoln Memorial (2 Lincoln Memorial Cir NW), definitely, with the Capitol, this is one of the most representative monuments of the city; visible in hundreds of films like Captain America, Forrest Gump, Transformers or Planet of the Apes… There are many stairs to climb to get the Lincoln statue, but I’ll tell you a secret… there is an entrance to the left of the stairs to take an elevator that takes you to the top… less tired…
From Lincoln Memorial we’ll move to the Thomas Jefferson Memorial (701 E Basin Dr SW), on your way you can see several pieces of art and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial also, all along the Potomac River and the Tidal Basin lagoon, if you have time you can take a ride on the swan boats…
Now we’ll go to the Capitol (East Capitol St NE & First St SE)… To do this I recommend you to walk inside the National Mall, you will pass through several Smithsonian museums, like the Holocaust Museum, the African Art Museum, the Smithsonian Castle, the Hirshhorn Museum, the Imax theater, the Air and Space Museum and more; another recommendation… choose previously the Museums you want to visit and separate a full day to visit those, is very difficult to see them all, do it would take you approximately 1 week, there are 19 of them… An extra data… In all Smithsonian Museums admission is free… in the film A Night at the Museum you can see scenes from the Natural History Museum, from American History Museum and the Air and Space Museum…
The Capitol is a work of art, it was built in 1800 and harbor the two chambers of the United States Congress… The Capitol has a large central dome and two wings… The Senate is on the north wing and the House of Representatives is on the south wing… you can take guided tours here…
At this point of day we only need to eat something delicious and fell down like a rock on our bed lol… if you do not want to walk all the tour… all buses can bring you close to this places, but take heart to enjoy Washington at your own rhythm… Now let’s walk to Union Station from the Capitol… another day in DC awaits us…
